Earwax Removal

Earwax plays an important protective role in keeping our ears clean and healthy. However, a build up of earwax can lead to blocked ears, reduced hearing or discomfort.

Most people will experience excess earwax at some point, as factors like age, ear canal shape, regular swimming and use of earbuds or hearing aids can all contribute to wax accumulation.

Symptoms

Typical symptoms of earwax build up include:

  • muffled hearing

  • a feeling of fullness in the ear

  • ringing in the ear

  • mild earache

It’s important never to use cotton buds or sharp objects to try to remove wax, as this can make the blockage worse and even harm your ear canal or eardrum. Instead, keep ears dry and clean externally and turn to safe, pharmacy recommended methods if build up becomes troublesome.

Managing earwax at home

Gentle earwax removal usually starts with softening drops, which help the wax break into smaller pieces and naturally work its way out.

Most adults can manage minor blockages safely at home with this option, but any pain, discharge or a history of ear issues means you should see a professional instead.

Avoid repeating treatments if the problem doesn’t clear up after several days, as stubborn or deep wax may need specialist care. If you think you may have an underlying ear health issue and are looking to remove wax from your ears, discuss the best treatment options for your needs with your doctor or audiologist.
