Eye Allergies
Eye allergies, also known as allergic conjunctivitis, occur when the immune system overreacts to harmless substances (allergens) that come into contact with the eyes.
This reaction releases histamine, which causes inflammation and swelling of the conjunctiva, the clear membrane covering the white part of the eye and lining the eyelids. Eye allergies can be seasonal, triggered by pollen, or ongoing, caused by dust mites or pets.
Common triggers
outdoor allergens such as pollen from grasses, trees and weeds
indoor allergens such as pet dander, dust mites and mould
everyday irritants such as smoke from fires or candles, perfumes and certain cleaning products
cosmetics and preservatives in products that go on the face or around the eyes
Symptoms
redness and itching in both eyes
burning or gritty feeling
watery eyes
swollen eyelids
increased sensitivity to light
other allergy symptoms, such as a runny nose or sneezing
Treatment
Treatment involves avoiding triggers. For you this could mean staying indoors more during high pollen seasons, spending more time outside away from dust and pet dander or changing your perfumes or cleaning products. Avoid rubbing your eyes even if they feel itchy or uncomfortable.
While your eyes are irritated and inflamed, avoid using eye makeup and other cosmetics around the eye. Also avoid wearing contact lenses while you are treating your eye allergies.
Antihistamine eye drops or oral antihistamines can block inflammation around the eye’s surface and also provide relief.
Some people may also benefit from using artificial tears, a preservative free option that can flush allergens from the eyes.
If you have any questions, consult your healthcare professional who can diagnose your symptoms for you.
