Red Eyes

Red eyes, also known as bloodshot or irritated eyes, occur when the delicate blood vessels on the surface of the eye become enlarged or inflamed. This change can happen for many reasons, from simple tiredness and allergies to more serious conditions like conjunctivitis, dry eye syndrome or irritation from contact lenses.

Redness in the eyes may appear suddenly or develop gradually, affecting one or both eyes.

Symptoms

Common symptoms of red eyes include itching, burning, watering, a gritty or scratchy sensation or sensitivity to light.

Factors like smoke, dust, wind, swimming pools and prolonged screen time can also play a role in making eyes look and feel uncomfortable.

While mild redness is often harmless and tends to resolve on its own, it can sometimes signal an infection or underlying health condition, such as conjunctivitis. If symptoms such as pain, vision changes or discharge develop, it is important to seek advice from a health professional.

Treatment

Simple steps can help soothe mild red eyes at home:

  • take regular breaks from screens and reading

  • use a cool compress to ease irritation

  • avoid rubbing the eyes or touching them with unwashed hands

  • wear sunglasses outdoors to protect from wind and UV rays

  • ensure contact lenses are used and cleaned as directed.

Artificial tears or lubricating eye drops are a gentle, effective way to increase comfort and promote healing for red or irritated eyes.
