Flossing

Good oral health habits begin with the basics, brushing twice a day, regular dental check ups and making mindful choices about what we eat and drink. But one step that’s often overlooked is flossing.

While a toothbrush does an excellent job cleaning the surfaces of your teeth, it simply can’t reach the tight spaces between them where plaque, bacteria and food particles tend to hide. If left untreated, these hard-to-reach areas can contribute to bad breath, gum irritation and tooth decay.

Flossing helps remove the build-up that brushing alone can miss, supporting healthier gums and a cleaner, fresher mouth.

Many dental professionals recommend cleaning between your teeth at least once a day as part of your oral care routine.

If your gums bleed slightly when you first begin flossing, this can often be a sign of inflammation caused by plaque build-up, and with gentle, consistent care, many people notice their gums becoming healthier and less sensitive over time.

Types of flossing

Traditional floss: this is the classic option, using a length of floss wrapped around the fingers to carefully clean between each tooth and below the gumline. For some people this can feel awkward or difficult to use.

Floss picks: these combine floss with an ergonomic handle and often include an additional pointed tip, making them ideal for reaching back teeth and removing trapped food particles with greater control and comfort.

Interdental brushes: these are small, reusable wire brushes specifically designed to clean tight spaces between teeth. People with larger gaps, orthodontic work, bridges or dexterity challenges may benefit from interdental brushes.
